Barrel Fired Pottery
Barrel fired pottery is first bisquet fired to about 1800 degrees to give it a bit of strength and stability. Then the pieces are placed in a barrel partially filled with wood chips. We use cedar dog bedding. Then the ware is fully covered with chips and fire wood is placed on top and lit. For a bit the fire is stoked and eventually allowed to burn until only ashes are left and the ware is exposed. When cool the ware is removed and washed throughly with a brush and Dawn dish detergent.
